Al is the bride's red — the scarf a mother-in-law gives, that veils the face, swaddles a first child and is tied at the waist for forty days after a birth. At its centre a single buta is drawn out of flower heads, the almond-flame of the Bakı type, with flowering bands down both sides and a zigzag above and below. Its name comes from that bridal red (al) and the buta.
